The Executioner’s Kiss

Police detective Malin Fors is back from Bangkok, restless and jaded, when the hi-jacking of a plane at Linköping Airport mercilessly throws her back into the fray. The hijacker is a man Malin knows: he is the father of a young girl who committed suicide after she was subjected to online bullying. The girl, Josefine, had been drunk and unconscious at a party, and was filmed in humiliating poses. The images were spread widely on social media and the teenagers responsible never faced any repercussions. Now, armed with hand grenades on a full flight, the grieving father demands the police turn over the three ringleaders of the online bullying incident.

Malin views the remorseless teens with disgust, secretly sympathizing with the father who has been driven insane by his desire for vengeance. But when one of the teens is later found brutally murdered in a car press, the situation takes a dramatic turn. Soon after, another of the teens is abducted and the third is also at risk. Have the police taken enough precautions or can Malin and her colleagues be blamed for not protecting the trio? And with the grieving father out of the picture, who is out to get these kids?

Malin is contacted by Daniel Högfeldt, her journalist ex-boyfriend, who has received an e-mail from someone claiming to be the killer, along with a photo of the murdered girl and the text: “Who decides who is to live and who is to die?” This is only the beginning of a barrage of messages from the murderer, who wants the newspaper to publish the photos and statements.

When a car with connections to the crime scenes turns up with a fake driver’s license, the investigation takes an unexpected turn. The woman on the license is one Jocelyn Karlsson, born in 1974. Are they dealing with a female killer? The photo of the woman is published in the newspaper, encouraging tips from the public. A very interesting tip comes in from someone who swears to recognize the woman as the mother of a dying girl taking part in a medical experiment. Malin and her colleagues soon realize they are dealing with a killer far more damaged and driven by revenge than they had imagined…

The Executioner’s Kiss is the second breathless thriller in the third suite about police detective Malin Fors.
