New Book: Punished by Ann-Helén Laestadius
In two different timelines, alternating between the 1950’s and 80’s, Punished follows five children during their time at a nomad school and thirty years later as adults.
At age seven, children of reindeer herders were forced to move away from home to a so-called nomad school, a boarding school where they were forbidden from speaking their own language and were taught to be ashamed of their heritage and culture. Else-Maj, Jon-Ante, Marge, Nilsa, and Anne-Risten all have different ways of coping both at school and afterwards. But one thing remains the same for all of them: the trauma caused by the nomad school experience will leave long-lasting emotional scars.
